Project Description: NVCA Permit and Erosion Protection Work

In September 2009, SBA was contacted by the homeowners of a home in Mono to complete erosion protection works on their property.  The homeowners were proposing to construct a second story addition on their existing home.  However, since the property is located on the bank of the Nottawasaga River and the home is situated within the floodplain of the Nottawasaga River, the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) required improvement of erosion protection works to ensure that there are no upstream or downstream impacts to neighbouring properties.

The homeowners contacted SBA to perform the design of the erosion protection as well as the certification that the works were completed as per the design.  However, after conversations with NVCA it became apparent that detailed site specific modeling was expected due to the fact that there was only general watershed floodplain information available.

In order to complete the project SBA divided it into 4 main tasks: topographical survey, floodplain modeling, erosion protection design and construction inspection.  SBA coordinated the topographical survey of the property to ensure that there was a sufficient amount of detail to develop a base map for the river floodplain model.  SBA then enlisted the expertise of our sub-consultant C.F. Crozier and Associates to perform the floodplain model in HEC-RAS.  Floodplain modeling was completed to establish both the baseline condition and to ensure that the preliminary erosion protection design would not cause flooding effects.  SBA then completed the erosion protection works design to protect the building from erosion hazard during a Regulatory Storm event.  After approval of the design by NVCA, SBA performed site visits during the construction of the erosion protection works to ensure that the works were completed as per the design.
